As the world becomes increasingly dependent on data-driven technologies, the energy consumption and environmental impact of data centers have become a growing concern. Governments and organizations are seeking innovative solutions to address this issue and achieve energy and data independence.

One company at the forefront of this effort is Immersion4, which has developed a unique and revolutionary approach to cooling electronics that has been recognized as a ground breaking technology to transform the data centre market. Here, we will explore how Immersion4’s DTM Cooling technology is contributing to solving the challenges of data centre pollution and energy consumption, as well as promoting circular economy principles and data sovereignty.

Immersion4, a leading company in the field of data centre cooling technology, is helping nations tackle the challenge of energy and data independence amidst increasing energy demand and diminishing natural resources. The company’s unique approach to cooling electronics, called Immersion4 DTM Cooling, has been recognized as a groundbreaking technology by Forrester Group’s Q4 2020 Sustainability Report. This technology is transforming the data centre market and gradually shifting the current inefficient industrial model towards a more sustainable one.

Immersion4 is Solar Impulse labelled as one of the 1000 companies to save the world. In 2019, the company was awarded the Best Use of ICT award and the Global Excellence award. Immersion4’s circular economy industrial business model, also known as I4IBM, is focused on zero micro particle emissions of any size.

At the highest levels of government, data and energy independence are recognized as crucial to maintaining a nation’s economic and political security. Data is now considered the most important natural resource, and data centres have become the most energy-consuming systems on the planet. The exponential growth in data consumption has led to unprecedented levels of electricity consumption, with almost all data centres being air and water cooled.

Immersion4’s DTM™ design is part of a broader rethinking of the data centre and how computing power can be brought to the edge of the network. This technology addresses several risk categories, such as GRID load and urban area density, while drastically reducing electricity and water consumption. Additionally, Immersion4’s technology enables the data to stay “in-country” by reducing and distributing the country’s data centre footprint. This addresses capacity challenges to the GRID and broader issues of national security around data management.

Immersion4 DTM™ technology simplifies the complexity of implementing data centres through a distributed architecture, helping to prevent the “unknown” aspects of cybersecurity and achieve realistic governance. With Immersion4, data storage, computing power, accessibility, and connectivity become independent of their energy sources and can be built locally, contributing to local economies and the communities’ quality of life.

Advantages of Immersion Cooling

  • Improved Cooling Performance: The liquid coolant provides a higher heat transfer rate than air, allowing for better cooling performance. This, in turn, increases the reliability and lifespan of the IT equipment.
  • Higher Power Density: Immersion cooling enables the data centre to increase its power density, as it is not limited by the constraints of traditional air cooling systems. This allows for more efficient use of space, reducing the physical size and energy consumption of the data centre.
  • Increased Reliability: Immersion cooling eliminates the need for fans, filters, and other mechanical components that are often the source of failures in traditional air cooling systems. This increases the reliability of the data centre and reduces the maintenance costs associated with air cooling systems.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Immersion cooling uses a dielectric liquid coolant that is non-toxic, non-flammable, and biodegradable, making it an environmentally friendly solution. Additionally, it eliminates the need for refrigerants and other chemicals that are harmful to the environment.

“Immersion cooling eliminates the need for fans, filters, and other mechanical components that are often the source of failures in traditional air cooling systems.”

Use Cases and Examples of Immersion Cooling in Data Centres

  • High-Performance Computing: Immersion cooling is ideal for high-performance computing applications that require high computational power and low latency. An example of this is the Liquid Cooled Data Centre developed by Facebook, which utilizes immersion cooling to support its artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives.
  • Edge Data Centres: Edge data centres are typically small, distributed data centres located closer to the end-user, designed to process and store data locally. Due to their limited space, edge data centres are ideal for immersion cooling, which allows for increased power density and reliability
  • Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Mining: Blockchain and cryptocurrency mining require a significant amount of computational power, which generates a large amount of heat. Immersion cooling provides a reliable and efficient solution for cooling the IT equipment used in these applications.

In conclusion, immersion cooling is an innovative solution to the cooling challenges faced by data centres. With its improved cooling performance, higher power density, increased reliability, and environmentally friendly nature, immersion cooling is an attractive option for data centre operators. The use cases and examples discussed above are just a few of the many applications where immersion cooling can be utilized to provide a more efficient and reliable data centre solution.

Immersion4 provides an alternative immersive based solution for cooling IT loads, networking equipment and batteries. Liquid cooling is not a new concept. The Immersion4 solution builds on over 10 years of development which has resulted in the launch of the solution in the summer of 2023.

Compared to existing air-cooling solutions, immersive cooling provides significant benefits to a data centre, server room, exchange building operator. Such benefits include:

  • lower up front capital costs,
  • lower operational costs,
  • longer life for the IT load,
  • significantly lower power costs,
  • uses no water,
  • no CO2 is produced,
  • and it operates with little or no noise.

Immersion4’s key differentiators include:

  • The liquid that it uses in the unit which enables all cables including fibre cables to be immersed.
  • The solution can take any type of server or networking equipment as long as it is immersion ready, so there is nothing proprietary in the equipment that can be cooled.
  • The design ensures that there is no splashing of liquid during operation.
  • Thermal management to ensure there are no hotspots.
  • The ability to take any server inserted in vertically in either way.
  • We do not have any refractive issues with optical connections.
  • We do not have any capillary action of liquid moving up cables.
  • We offer a different commercial model

Recent milestones include the launch of the solution in the summer of 2023 after a number of iterations to get the solution right. It also includes the delivery of the first unit to the UK with a major operator for testing a range of equipment.

Immersion4 will be able to publish a number of success stories in the coming month or two once we are able to publicise new orders in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and USA
